And they will fly like Angels.. On July 1, 2011 a good Man, a good Christian Man received his wings and is now flying with the Angels. Archie Glen Slate, 84 years old was born February 17, 1927 in Gouldbusk to Bro. Brady Slate and Sister Dessie (Terrell) Slate. He attended school in Gouldbusk and Mozelle, graduating in 1945. He was drafted into the U. S. Army and served his Country during the Korean Conflict being stationed in Germany . Upon discharge from the Army, he returned to the family farm in Gouldbusk. Only two people know who targeted whom, but the romance of a lifetime began when Archie met Patsy Inez Whitehead. They were married October 25, 1952 in the home of her parents in Coleman. During the early years of their marriage, Archie worked as a parts salesman in the oilfield living in various parts of Texas and New Mexico and having two sons along the way, but his heart was always in Coleman County . So, in 1958, Archie, Pat, and the boys moved back to Coleman where he was an auto parts salesman until his retirement in 1996. He always loved farming, and watched over and cared for his sheep, but with two girls now added to the family, his time with family was more important. He and Pat were always at whatever events the children were in, later at whatever their grandchildren were involved in, whether sports, band, or Church. Archie was always active in the community being a member of the Noon Lions Club for over 50 years. After his retirement, he was still not content to sit around, so he began volunteering even more, especially for Meals on Wheels where he got to get out and see people and be a walking Testimony for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was especially always active in the Church, first at Gouldbusk Congregational Methodist Church and later at Trinity United Methodist Church . Whenever the doors of the Church were open, he was there leading the singing, teaching Sunday School, or mowing the grass. Archie leaves on this earth, his loving wife: Patsy, of 58 plus years, 2 sons and daughters in law; Chris & Denal Slate of Pipe Creek, Johnny & Sandra Slate of San Angelo, 2 daughters and sons in law; Kay & Rick McKee of Coleman, and Rebecca & James Eidson of Abilene . Also surviving are 9 grandchildren; Nova, Celeste, Natalie, Brad, Kristen, Sujo, Ricka, Sam, and Ali, 12 great grandchildren, a brother and sister in law; John & Hazel Slate of Texas City, numerous in laws, Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, and Many Friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Eugene, and Brady Claude Jr. and a sister; Esther. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Coleman Meals on Wheels, Coleman Senior Center or Trinity United Methodist Church . Visitation will be at Walker Funeral Home on Monday, July 4, 2011 from 5:00 until 6:30 P.M. Funeral Service will be at First United Methodist Church on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at 1:30 P.M. with interment to follow at the Gouldbusk Cemetery in Gouldbusk , Texas under the direction of Walker Funeral Home of Coleman.
