DOROTHY YATES

May 12, 1915 - February 22, 2007

FORT WORTH -- Dorothy Lee Yates, 91, a loving mother, grandmother and former teacher, died peacefully Thursday morning, Feb. 22, 2007, at her daughter's home. Funeral: 3 p.m. Saturday in the sanctuary of University Christian Church. The Rev. Dr. Tim Carson, senior minister, will officiate. Burial: Dorothy will be laid to rest next to her husband, Leslie, in Greenwood Memorial Park. Memorials: Consideration of contributions to the Gladney Center for Adoptions or Cook Children's Medical Center in memory of Dorothy is suggested. Born May 12, 1915 in Omaha, Dorothy Lee was the daughter of John Jackson and Cordie Lee Wallis Henderson. She was a graduate of Stripling High School before receiving a degree in English from Texas Christian University. She married Leslie Yates, former publisher of the Fort Worth Press, in 1938. Mr. Yates died in 1980. Mrs. Yates taught at Alexander Hogg School and was an avid seamstress, having learned to sew at age 6. She began her own clothing company, Sunshine Set, making and selling tennis clothes. Whether teaching school, working at a wartime nursery or sewing clothes for premature infants, Dotty Yates made children her mission in life. Survivors: Sons, Dr. Charles Yates and his wife, Rosetta Terry, of Los Angeles, Calif., and John Yates and his wife, Beverly, of Fort Worth; daughter, Shirley Yates Turner and her husband, Wes, of Fort Worth; and grandchildren, Paolo Yates, Taylor Yates, Ashley Yates, Andrew Yates, Sara Turner and Leslie Turner.
